OSSE observations of positron annihilation in the galactic plane
نویسندگان
چکیده
OSSE has measured the galactic longitude distribution of both the 511 keV annihilation line radiation and the three-photon positronium continuum within 40 of the center. They have similar shapes, with a composite longitude distribution well represented by an 11 FWHM Gaussian central bulge together with a possible broad disk component comprising as much as 15% of the integral ux between 40 and 320 longitude. Contributions from one or more discrete source(s) at or near the center with total annihilation radiation (line plus continuum) intensities of up to 4 10 4 photons cm 2 sec 1 (2 upper limit) are compatible with the observed distribution. The best estimate of the positronium fraction is 0.97 0.03. No evidence for variation in the positronium fraction is observed.

Positron annihilation radiation from the Galaxy has been observed by the OSSE, SMM and TGRS instruments. Improved spectral modeling of OSSE observations has allowed studies of the distribution of both positron annihilation radiation components, the narrow line emission at 511 keV and the positronium continuum emission. The results derived for each individual annihilation component are then comp...

The principal results on active galactic nuclei from the Phase 1 observations by the COMPTON Gamma Ray Observatory are presented. These include the detection of a new class of high-energy gamma ray sources by the EGRET instrument and extensive observations of Seyfert galaxies in low-energy gamma rays by OSSE. The identified EGRET sources are associated with core-dominated radio loud objects, OV...
متن کاملThe Distribution of Galactic 511 keVPositron
The Oriented Scintillation Spectrometer Experiment (OSSE) on NASA's Comp-ton Gamma-Ray Observatory has completed numerous observations of the Galactic plane and Galactic center region. A principle objective of these observations was to measure the distribution of the Galactic positron annihilation radiation. Most of these observations provided positive detections of the narrow 511 keV annihilat...
